Skull Shaver Pitbull Comparison: Silver vs. Gold vs. Platinum
November 13, 2024 • 8 min read
Skull Shavers are among the most popular and best-selling head shavers on the market. Their Pitbull series is their flagship line of electric head shavers, but what's the difference between the different models?
The Pitbulls come in three variants: Silver, Gold, and Platinum. Which one is right for you? Let's find out together.
We'll compare the three and recommend which head shaver suits you. You'll also discover a more affordable, popular, and sellable alternative to the three.
Here's a Skull Shaver Comparison Chart:
The Pitbull Shavers
The guys at Skull Shavers are one of the pioneers in introducing ergonomically designed head shavers to the market. Their two-finger insert design on their Pitbull head shavers allows shavers to put their fingers between the shaver blades and the body, making it comfortable to grip and giving them more control over shaving, even in hard-to-reach areas like the back of their necks and ears.
All three Skull Shaver Pitbull models have IPX5 water resistance for cleaning under water and shaving in the shower, and work while both cordless and corded, but that's where the similarities end. Let's dive into the details for each model:
Pitbull Silver
The Pitbull Silver is Skull Shaver's entry-level device. It has Carver Pro 4 blades, which are best for thick or coarse hair (more on the blades below), a 600 mAh battery good for 60 minutes of cordless shaving, IPX5 water resistance, and a one-year warranty.
Since it's the most affordable model, you won't get a cleaning dock, travel lock, or travel case.
The Silver costs $59.99 (with subscription) which is a pretty hefty price for those looking for an entry-level shaver, it's priced at the mid range level so that's something you need to think about.
The Freebird FlexSeries for example is only $39.95 and comes with freebies worth $60. When you shop around, you'll see a handful of shavers with more features that cost a lot less.
So why are head shavers buying the Pitbull Silver?
I think it's the unique two finger insert design which you can't buy anywhere else, plus Skull Shavers' reputation.
Pitbull Gold
The Pitbull Gold is the best-selling Skull Shaver and it's no surprise why. It costs $30 more than the Silver and at $89.99 (with subscription) but you'll get a more powerful 1400 mAh battery good for 90 minutes of cordless shaving and LED display showing numerical percentage of charge left.
The Gold has the Forte Pro 4 blades as standard (best for most people), IPX5 water resistance, and a one-year warranty.
Pitbull Platinum
The top-of-the-line Pitbull Platinum is basically a "Gold model" with extras.
The upgrades from the Gold include:
-
Travel lock
-
Travel case
-
Rinse stand
-
Two-year warranty
-
Platinum chrome finish
-
Cleaning indicator on LED display
Is it worth the $197.99 price, which is almost $110 more than the Gold?
A travel lock is a neat feature that traveling shavers would love to have on their shavers. It prevents your shaver from accidentally turning on while in your travel bag.
The Platinum rinse stand is great for cleaning and rinsing the shaver but not as essential as the travel case. The Platinum travel case is lightweight and can also be used as storage for the shaver and accessories when not on the road.
Buying the Gold and the accessories separately is more affordable. The travel case and the rinse stand costs $14.99 each, separately.
The chrome finish looks premium compared to the black finish of the Silver and Gold Pitbulls, but according to some online reviews, will fade in time.
The extended two-year warranty may give some users peace of mind after paying a hefty amount.
Some shavers (those who love luxury shavers) may see the value in the upgrades and won't mind the price, while others may find the price difference too big just for a travel lock, chrome finish, and added accessories.
What are the Differences Between the Pitbull Shavers?
Blades
Skull Shaver Blades are interchangeable. If you find your Silver model's Carver blade too aggressive, you can switch to the Forte. Similarly, if you have coarse and curly hair, you change the Forte blades on your Gold and Platinum models for a Carver. For sensitive scalps, you can replace your blades with the Baron blades.
The Silver, Gold, and Platinum models have switched to four-head blades from the previous five-head versions. The blades are available in three types: Carver, Forte, and Baron. They are interchangeable so that you can use any blade type for any shaver model; even the older five-head versions. While the 4-head blades are standard, 5-head blades are available for purchase separately.
Carver
The Carver blades are standard on the Pitbull Silver and are designed for thick and coarse hair. They have 2 cutting rings and a flat foil mesh.
They provide a more aggressive shave than other Skull Shaver blade types.
Forte
The Forte comes standard with the Pitbull Gold and Platinum. It's a more versatile and all-around blade that delivers a smooth shave for most users. It also has 2 cutting rings and a beveled foil mesh.
Baron
Baron blades feature 3 cutting rings and an S-contoured foil mesh and are designed for those with sensitive scalps.
Battery Life
The Pitbull Silver has a smaller battery (600 mAh) with a 60-minute runtime compared to the Gold and Platinum's (1400 mAh) 90-minute power.
Features
Travel Lock
The travel lock feature is only found on the Platinum model and is a valuable addition for travelers. It prevents your Pitbull Shaver from accidentally turning on while inside your travel bag. You can read our article on travel shavers for more choices.
Indicators
The Silver has an LED-only battery indicator that flashes red when battery life is low.
The Gold has an exact numerical % LED indicator, which is a useful feature.
The Platinum has the same percentage indicator as the Gold with an added wash indicator.
Accessories
When you buy the Silver and Gold it's a shaver-only deal without accessories. The Platinum has a travel case and rinse stand.
Warranty
The Silver and Gold have a one-year warranty, while the Platinum has a two-year warranty.
Finish
The Silver and Gold have a similar black finish, while the Platinum has a chrome-plated finish that users claim fades in time.
Which is the Best Skull Shaver?
Silver
The Silver model is a good choice for shavers on a budget who prefer a Skull Shaver. It may have less battery power, but it's enough juice for shaving. You shave faster with the Skull Shaver (90 second dry shave), so it's not that much of a deal breaker for the cheapest Skull Shaver of the bunch.
Pitbull Gold or Platinum are better choices for users who value battery power.
But before buying the Silver, remember that you can buy the Gold for $30 more. You'll get a battery upgrade, blade upgrade, and a neat LED exact percentage indicator.
Gold
The Gold is the best option for most head shavers, and who find the Platinum too expensive (almost $110 more) and don't need the added accessories.
It's also a good choice for shavers who find the Silver's battery life too short and want an exact percentage battery indicator.
Platinum
The Platinum is the best choice for frequent travelers and users who prefer luxury shavers with all the bells and whistles (travel lock, chrome finish, travel case, rinse stand), and a longer two-year warranty.
The Freebird FlexSeries Pro: The Best Skull Shaver Alternative
Skull Shavers are popular head shavers, but they are expensive. The Freebird FlexSeries Pro is an upgraded version of the best-selling original FlexSeries head shaver. It costs the same as Pitbull Silver - Skull Shaver's cheapest model - but has features more similar with the Pitbull Platinum.
The Silver costs $66.65 or $59.99 with a blade subscription. The FlexSeries Pro is only $59.95 and includes a bunch of better features and useful freebies worth $60 alone.
For a lower price, you'll get these upgraded features on the FlexSeries Pro vs the Silver:
-
Travel lock
-
IPX7 waterproofing
-
Three level LED battery indicator
-
Adaptive motor (adjusts speed based on hair density)
For me, these added features on the FlexSeries Pro that you can't find on the Pitbull Silver is worth the switch.
Along with the FlexSeries Pro head shaver, you'll also receive:
-
Advanced Nose & Ear Trimmer
-
Upgraded Precision Clipper
-
3, 5, 7mm Safety Guards
-
Micro Cleaning Brush
Freebird also offers subscribers a lifetime warranty and discounts on blade replacements.

The Bottom Line
Choosing between Skull Shaver models doesn't have to be complicated. There's one that will fit your budget and specific needs.
For value seekers, the Pitbull Silver is a decent choice. It offers the Skull Shaver reputation and performance at a slightly lower price point, although there are better options out there.
The Pitbull Gold is a little more expensive, but it has a longer battery life and a more informative battery indicator, which some shavers would love over the ordinary flashing LED indicator.
If you have the budget and want all the bells and whistles, the top-of-the-line Platinum shaver doesn't disappoint. It has a travel lock, Platinum travel case, Platinum rinse stand, wash indicator, and the longest warranty.
If you're looking for better value overall, the FlexSeries Pro is the best alternative. It offers better features and plenty of freebies for only a few dollars more than the Silver.
